Innocence Project Petition for Troy Davis

Troy Davis is scheduled to be executed tomorrow in Georgia for a murder he has always said he didn’t commit. There are serious doubts about the evidence used to convict Davis, and today the Innocence Project is calling on the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to stop the execution so the evidence of Davis’ innocence can be thoroughly reviewed.

Davis has served two decades on Georgia’s death row for the murder of a Savannah police officer in 1989. He was convicted almost exclusively on the basis of unreliable eyewitness identification testimony. Seven of the nine eyewitnesses who testified at his trial have since recanted, and new evidence points to another person as the real perpetrator.

The petition is quick. As in about 20s quick! Please sign it.

hopefully thats sarcasm. :/ white feminists…please remember women do 3/4 of the worlds labor, MOSTLY WOC!!!! that means most if not all the shit you get at any supermarket or any kinda shop, really, has a really high chance of having been grown, picked, made by some cruelly underpaid WOC. whether you can afford a housekeeper or not. no WOC ever gets paid as much as white women either.

But They Didn’t Know About Racism Back Then!

I hear this from people all the time when it comes to all forms of oppression, but particularly racism. When discussing the past atrocities committed by white folks onto people of color, someone, almost always a white person tries to excuse the white people in the past by suggesting that they just didn’t know what they were doing was racist.

Slavery? Native American genocide? Banning racial minorities from immigrating to the US? The Zoot Suit riots? Internment of Japanese Americans? Etc.?

“Yeah, that was bad, but they didn’t know that what they were doing was racist/knew what racism was/didn’t think about race!”

I think what people neglect to think about is that the people of color who were the victims of these racist acts definitely knew what racism was. They could see that the way they were treated was predicated upon their race. They lived every day seeing it and having to take it and normalize it as if that was how life was supposed to be. So when I hear, “But they didn’t know about racism back then!” to me, it suggests that the mindset of “they” meaning “white people” is somehow more important than the suffering of the people of color they oppressed. And to me, it’s just another example of how white people control how we see US history.

Plus, the fact that they happened happened in the past does not negate the fact that these acts were heinous and racist, the consequences of which still affect racial inequality today, and I don’t believe that we should just give the white people of the past a free pass and treat them as children by saying, “They didn’t know better.” No, it’s far worse: They knew exactly what they were doing; they just didn’t care that people of color were suffering.

He goes on to write:

For them, having more is an inalienable right, a right they acquired through their own ‘effort,’ with their “courage to take risks.’ If others do not have more, it is because they are incompetent and lazy, and worst of all is their unjustifiable ingratitude towards the ‘generous gestures’ of the dominant class. Precisely because they are ‘ungrateful’ and ‘envious,’ the oppressed are regarded as potential enemies who must be watched.

Ok. Now think about this in terms of the youth of color rioting in England. Friere is describing here the justification for police/state violence against poor people who are now destroying the material property of the oppressor class. As the news insinuates, “we must arm ourselves (with police) against those dark-skinned youth who just can’t be satisfied to not have what we have all worked so hard for.”

To this, Friere would say, “you no longer are, you merely have.”
